KĀneʻohe
Kāneʻohe translates to Bamboo Man and is known as one of the largest ahupuaʻa to exist in Oʻahu. It is located in Koʻolaupoko on the Windward side of Oʻahu. Kāneʻohe is named after Kane, the god of water, and his kinolau, ʻohe, which sprouts on the rainy, windward sides of Oʻahu. As much as I can give you information about Kāneʻohe, you would wonder what connections I would have for focusing on Kāneʻohe and its waterways. I am not from Hawaiʻi, I am not Local, I am not Native Hawaiian. So what are my ties? My parents would often take me to different beaches and sail out so that I could experience being part of the ocean and learn about navigation as a child. The one place I made a connection with since I was a child was Kaneʻohe Bay area, where it was known to have launched the replica of Hōkūleʻa. I was fascinated by the vast history, species, and of course, Hōkūleʻa, which led me to take interest in Hawaiian Studies. |
